A poison to nature, I do not belong,
Thrown away, I persist far too long.
I package and wrap: I am useful, I prevail.
I am eaten by birds, fish, and humpback whale.
Like insecticides, I don’t break down
into the building blocks of life: water, carbon, oxygen.
Instead, I wash up on beaches. I choke the ocean.
Notes
Note about the poem:
This poem has a deliberately ‘broken’ rhyming structure, it is meant to jar, to disconcert. It is talking about something that does not belong in nature, something that breaks the pattern of the chemistry of life.
